"To neutralize the power of an alpha male requires a large coalition, larger than chimpanzees usually achieve."

Matt Ridley, The Origins of Virtue: Human Instincts and the Evolution of Cooperation

Thank goodness for term limits. Our large coalition has advocated and fought over who would follow the defeated; it did not bring about the Bush defeat. There have been moments, certainly, the 2006 elections, growing public disaffection, a few demos, and some backbone-building in the press and Congress. The endless nomination/election season also set the stage for collective potshots. But, in the end, we didn't do the unbushing. Thank the twenty-second ammendment ratified in 1951,largely in reaction to Franklin Roosevelt and his four elected terms, now a role model for our new president.
