Standing Up

"A handful of Republican governors are considering turning down some money from the federal stimulus package..."

Melinda, Deslatte, "GOP Governors Consider Turning Down Stimulus Money," Yahoo News, February 18, 2009.

Where have I heard that one before? Another oldy but goody from the deep well of childish peeve. Reminds me of that other bravado statement, "We don't really need your money. It's so important we're going to do it anyway." Must be all those federal strings. Maybe.

I say we take these patriotic Republicans at their word and seal the deal quickly -- no stimulus money for them, maybe no foreclosure money either for the bravest, purest of the bunch. We would then have something like a natural experiment of states for comparison purposes: Does the stimulus create jobs or not? How powerful is devolutionary, market, non-interventionism? I hesitate to say this, but their willingness to toy with people's lives for the sake of ideological pabulum is awe-inspiring and deserves to be memorialized.

Any bets on how many of these guvs will stick with the experiment?
