Tainted Alternative

"But there's one kind of money Costco won't touch: food stamps."

Jim Dwyer,"Neighbors Use Food Stamps, But Not Costco,"New York Times, May13, 2009.

Ouch! Costco occupies hallowed ground as the alternative to the evil giant (i.e. Wal-Mart), paying better wages and benefits among other things. Costco is the poster child for good "retail" capitalism.

"Many other big chains, including Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, B.J's, and Sam's Club do take them."

Last week I heard a rehashing of the Big Box Ordinance fight in Chicago of several years ago -- aimed at Wal-Mart as it tried to enter the city market. A community organizer proudly announced their commitment to Costco in the Logan Square neighorhood.

I guess nobody has perfect behavior.
