Wandering Dissident

"Here is perhaps the most essential of the century's figures--the wandering dissident..."

Blurb from Christopher Hitchens, Newsday, about Ryszard Kapuscinski, Imperium

Do you grow up wanting to be a wandering dissident? Or it is that just who you become through a combination of circumstance and deep-down inclination? It's a talent.

It means a life of dislocation and a life of turning a skeptical, sometimes horrified, eye on the wretched works of human purpose, belief and folly.

"...always on the side of emancipation but who has to find a way of getting his point not only past the censors but into the indifferent skills of the readers as well."

Is storytelling a requirement for wandering dissidents? I don't know. But communicating and drawing a few lessons and observations in the hope of improving things is Kapuscinski's point.
