Raw Determination?

"[Military experts] do not know if he [the President] possesses tenacity, the ability to fixate on a simple conviction and grip it, viscerally and unflinchingly, through complexity and confusion. They do not know if he possesses the obstinacy that guided Lincoln and Churchill..."

David Brooks, "The Tenacity Question," The New York Times, October 30, 2009.

Are the stakes the same or as clear for Afghanistan as they were for Civil War America or for fighting Hitler? Were the "simple convictions" of LBJ, Nixon and Bush worth the lives lost and the American interests protected? Does simple conviction and tenacity justify 80,000+ lives lost in Iraq?

After a year in office we have learned some things about President Barack Obama. He's stayed on agenda, compromised when needed, brought in smart people and actually thinks about things. I would prefer a leader who thinks, commits and keeps thinking to a tenacious warrior who has a hard time thinking once and never looks back.
