Showing Up!

"The once powerful community activist group ACORN, based in New Orleans for most of its 40-year history,is folding amid falling revenues..."

Danny Monteverde, "ACORN closing N.O.,nationally," The Times-Picayune, March 23,2010

No need for me to rehash the ACORN saga. Lots of blame to go around. But reading about ACORN's closing in New Orleans while in New Orleans as the fifth anniversary of Katrina approaches gives pause. Who was on the spot to advocate for the most vulnerable communities affected by the storms? Who was in the 9th Ward cleaning out homes and helping people get some footing in the aftermath.

There's a long list of luminaries, pundits, talk-show hosts, government officials, video hit artists and politicians who were nowhere to be seen. ACORN showed up!
