Gates Rules

"Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parent's fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them."

Bill Gates, "Rules Which Should Be Posted in All Our Schools."

I'm a sucker for Ben Franklin lists of do's and don't's for guiding behavior and living the good life. I've included several of my father's lists in Nonprofit Leadership.

And don't whine about other people's mistakes.

"Life is not divided into semesters..." I couldn't disagree more. Sure, you don't get summers off, maybe Bill did, but life does chunk out into the rhythms of fall and spring, winter break, etc.

"Television is NOT real life..." Oh come on. In the early 1980s I developed some explanatory theories about human behavior from watching the TV shows of the time as I wrote papers and studied for graduate exams.

Life is complex.
The self-righteous will inherit the world
The good get bad and the bad get good

Of course, Bill Gates didn't really say these things. Or did he?
