Pesky Clouds

"By placing my awareness on my breath,I come to see that thoughts are just thoughts--that they shift and change, coming and going like passing clouds."

Claude Anshin Thomas,At Hell's Gate: A Soldier's Journey from War to Peace

That's easier said than done, and many thoughts are anything but friendly, certainly not fluffy passing clouds. Some thoughts are barbed and obnoxious bit players in one's own personal Groundhog Day, replaying endlessly. In short, the stuff of obsessing. Is this upping one's game? Working through worst case scenarios? Honing reactions for the reality show of everyday?

Yes, maybe, but this is also suffering in the Buddhist sense. Attachment. Forgetfullness. Conditioning. Is there a way out? Can thought zombies be stopped? Breathing helps, struggling to be present, free of the little obsessing thoughts. Letting go. When will I see those pesky clouds.
