Two Jobs Messages

"Obama told workers Thursday at a manufacturing plant in Buffalo that economists might consider the recession to be technically over. But he said, 'it's not a real recovery until people can feel it in their own lives.'"

Associated Press, "Obama: Recession goes on for those without jobs," Yahoo News, May 13, 2010

At the same time: "Citing last week's economic reports showing job growth in the U.S. for the fourth straight month, the president was arguing that his efforts to rescue the economy are working, despite an unemployment rate that continues to hover near 10 percent."

The tough job of leadership is being able to speak out of both sides of your mouth --and both messages are true and important. It's tough times unless you experience it differently -- and we're making progress. Unfortunately, another paradox of progress that is that it undermines the political will to advance bolder measures to deal with long-term unemployment. Things are getting better, right?

I wonder what the messages will be six months from now?
