Succession Planning

"For many observers of contemporary Chicago it is tempting to recycle the past as present in a possibly unself-conscious quest to ward off the dread that we have have been condemned to live in uninteresting times."

Larry Bennett, The Third City: Chicago and American Urbanism

I suppose it's equally tempting to imagine a future detached from the past so that we can live an unencumbered present. To some degree this is a malady of living through the era of Richard ll. Do we confuse the wisdom of longevity with the continuity of trends, preconditions, wheels set in motion, the bigger picture? And do we understand the choices not taken?
